Boring out butt stock for cleaning kit

I recently purchased a WASR and would like to have the cleaning kit with the trap door in the stock. I shoot a lot out in South West Texas and it's very dusty. I know it's not necessary but I would like to be able to clean the gun in the field. My stock is not cut out for the cleaning kit, I'm not sure if this is standard on the WASRs. I had a Romanian AK about 10 years ago that did have this. I know the quick solution is to find a surplus stock that already has this option, but I'd like to keep the stock I have since the wood grains aren't too far off from the forestock.

Anyways, has anyone bored out the stock to accept the cleaning kits and trap door butt plate? Thanks for any help.

That sounds like a fun little

That sounds like a fun little project. I am surprised you found one with a wood stock WITHOUT the hole... Let me know if you need some pictures and dimensions of what the original hole looks like. If you decide to do it and you don't mind, take some pictures of it, and with your permission we can work it into an article!

I actually got a used one off of Gunbroker.com last night that has the hole. I'm gonna strip it down and try to match the stain. If I can't get the color right then I'll try boring out my current stock. I'll definitely take pictures if I do attempt the project. I appreciate the offer for the dimensions though.

Yeah, let me know how that

Yeah, let me know how that works out. Staining should work. You could consider staining your existing forend in the same stain to better make it match. Post some pics when you're done!

Well I got the new buttstock

Well I got the new buttstock and stained it. It won't match at all. It looks good, but it's a laminated buttstock. I think there's a gun show coming up soon so I'll look for some laminated front grips. If I can't find any soon I'll bore out the original stock to accept the cleaning kit. I will take pictures of the process so we can do a write up on it.
